Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant (Level 5)

This apprenticeship is suitable for Teaching Assistants, an 18 month course that develops the high-level theoretical knowledge and practical autonomy required for specialist practice.

This Level 5 course is the essential next step for TAs seeking a specialist pathway, equipping you with the high-level theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to operate autonomously, confidently lead targeted interventions for complex needs (including specific learning difficulties and mental health and well-being), and champion inclusive practice across your school. 

By professionalising your role and developing a deep, specialist understanding, you will be prepared to contribute to strategic pupil provision and positively impact the futures of the most vulnerable students.

This apprenticeship focuses on:

  • Evidence Based Pedagogy: Mastering the mechanics and research-informed strategies needed to translate complex learning theories into impactful classroom practice.
  • Advanced SEND and SEMH Strategies: Developing deep expertise in identifying and reducing barriers to learning for neurodiverse students and those with high needs.
  • Curriculum Adaptation: Gaining the skills to evaluate and forensically adapt curriculum materials and environments to ensure they are accessible yet remain appropriately aspirational.
  • Collaborative Specialist Leadership: Learning to act as a professional bridge between teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies to ensure a cohesive approach to a child’s development.
  • Targeted Interventions: Building the capacity to independently plan, deliver, and evaluate bespoke intervention programs that have
  • a measurable impact on pupil outcomes.
  • Statutory/ Non-Statutory Frameworks: Deepening understanding of the legal frameworks, such as the SEND Code of Practice and Equality Act, that dictate how we provide inclusive education.
  • Regular observation workshops with realtime peer and assessor feedback.
  • Monthly specialist tutorials for your chosen specialism.
