Aspiring and New Heads (Level 6)

*L6 Improvement Leader Qualification.

This 18 month apprenticeship course is suitable for Aspiring Heads, and New Heads.

Designed for Aspiring Headteachers and those newly appointed in their first two years, this advanced curriculum transforms instructional leaders into strategic architects of school improvement and operational excellence.

Moving beyond traditional pedagogical leadership, you will master the high-level Improvement Leader (Level 6) skillset, enabling you to become a systems thinker capable of strategic deployment, applying Lean principles to dramatically reduce staff workload, and driving measurable, evidence-based change across your organisation.

By focusing on advanced data analysis and developing a sustainable coaching culture, this programme positions you as a primary candidate for Headship and ensures you pass early tenure reviews with robust competency evidence, delivering quantified benefits like improved student progress, reduced persistent absence, and enhanced Ofsted readiness for your school.

This apprentice focuses on:

  • Strategic Deployment (Hoshin Kanri): Learning how to translate a high-level vision into a rigorous, actionable strategic plan that aligns every member of staff with the school’s core priorities.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Mastering Root Cause Analysis and Lean methodologies to identify and eliminate the systemic waste that causes staff burnout and slows pupil progress.
  • Data-Driven Strategy: Moving beyond basic data tracking to advanced statistical analysis, allowing leaders to predict trends and make evidence-based decisions with absolute confidence.
  • Leading Sustainable Change: Developing the psychological and tactical skills needed to lead large-scale cultural shifts, ensuring that improvements stick and become part of the school’s DNA.
  • Financial and Resource Optimisation: Applying Value Stream Mapping to school operations to ensure that every pound and every hour of staff time is focused on maximum impact for learners.
  • Coaching for High Performance: Building a coaching culture at the senior level to empower middle leaders and create a self-sustaining cycle of continuous professional improvement.
  • Commercial Understanding: Recognising and valuing the Voice of the Customer, listening and responding to demonstrate commitment to key stakeholders to drive change.
This will be a transformative course for anyone thinking of going into or is new to Headship. David Williams, Course Lead & Education Director
